I HATE 12-STEP MEETINGS!
Anyone can attend a 12-Step meeting, which means just about everyone does so, at least a few times. If you don’t feel the 12 Steps are for you, then you really need a Sober Coach to help you determine the most effective way for you to maintain your abstinence.
Here’s a bit of advice: if a Sober Coach or Sober Companion begins his or her relationship with you by demanding that you attend meetings in a 12-Step group, you probably should end that relationship immediately. There are some sober companions in this field who represent themselves as professionals, but who really just want to get you into meetings so you take up less of their time.
The best way for a Sober Coach to initiate a relationship with his/her client is to listen to you: your needs, your experiences, and your desires:
- We evaluate your reasons for wanting to be abstinent from drugs & alcohol.
- We completely avoid any negative judgments about your path.
- We craft a treatment plan designed to meet your needs and your inclinations.
There is not a single, guaranteed way to achieve ongoing abstinence from alcohol or drugs. The most popular method for those seeking recovery is the 12-Step group. The most widely-known of these are Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, Sex Addicts Anonymous, and Debtor’s Anonymous. In fact, there many more. If you have an obsessive-compulsive streak, there is a 12-Step group for you.
But remember this: there are many roads to recovery and having a good life. A good Sober Companion will help you find alternatives to 12-step programs if you do not feel comfortable there. We assist you in developing your own support system from the local or online community, co-workers, similarly inclined artists, family, or religion.
It is vital to have a Sober Companion who honors your choices and path. What is important is that you become complete with your past so that you can reach your recovery goals and enjoy quality of life. Sober Coaching will help you identify and live the life you want on your own terms.
If you already have some clean time under your belt, Sober Coaching can help you leverage the strengths you have gained in recovery into something really wonderful. Coaching will help you get clear about what you want to do with the rest of your life and then do it. With a coach at your side you will find the courage to reach for your dreams.
